What It Means To Detoxify
As we enter a new year, the dietary and environmental toxins we must overcome will continue to mount. The average North American processes approximately 4 lbs of chemical toxins per year. As your Naturopathic doctor I am able to assist you in the identification of these toxins in the body. Then we can look at natural methods of supporting the detoxification and elimination of these harmful compounds.
Toxic substances are everywhere: in the air we breathe, the food we eat and the water we drink. Even the bacteria in our intestines produce their own toxic waste products. It can be strongly said that the health of the individual is largely determined by the ability of the body to DETOXIFY. In a detoxification program, the main toxic substances that should be targeted are:
1. Heavy metals (e.g. mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, aluminum, nickel) 2. Chemicals (e.g. drugs, alcohol, solvents, formaldehyde, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, food additives, fungicides) 3. Unfriendly organisms (e.g. bacteria, yeast, mold, fungus, parasites and their associated toxins). 4. Diet (e.g. protein breakdown products like ammonia, urea)
A good detoxification program is recommended at least twice per year (usually after Christmas and early spring). The Natural Path has partnered with Nature’s Source supplement store and a number of professional suppliers to offer you an excellent series of detoxification programs (depending on your needs). Call us at the Natural Path for more details.
IBS and Allergies
Also linked with the condition ‘leaky gut syndrome’, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) is a result of the small intestine becoming permeable or leaky. This allows large undigested food particles to pass through the lining triggering food sensitivities and allergies.
Significant improvements can be made through dietary changes which can therefore reduce some trigger factors for IBS. Practicing some stress reduction techniques such as breathing techniques, and positive psychology, is important as there is a direct link between stress and an aggravation of IBS symptoms.
Food must be fresh, whole, and good quality – ridding the body of unnecessary chemicals that may be contaminated within it. Processed and fried foods may be a convenience, although the denatured quality slowly penetrates organs leaving one with under functioning systems (digestive, circulatory, immune/lymphatic etc…).
By closely working together with your Naturopathic doctor, a specific diet protocol must be followed and maintained for optimal results such as a blood type diet in conjunction with a hypoallergenic diet.
Improve Cancer
In 2005, the Canadian Cancer Society estimated that 149,000 Canadians would be diagnosed with Cancer (3,500 increase from previous year), and 69,500 would die from cancer (a 1,200 increase from previous year).
Canada does not have a national strategy in place in order to fight cancer. As a result, cancer control across the country is fragmented, uncoordinated and uneven.
Cancer is the leading health concern for Canadians with 2 in 5 Canadians facing a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime! The Canadian Cancer Society would like to implement the “Cancer Strategy for Cancer Control”, although the federal government is presently not paying attention to the situation at hand. They haven’t yet committed to funding and implementing this important health initiative for Canada.
Act now: It is our responsibility to enhance our personal wellbeing for optimal health. We are risking our lives by waiting until symptoms progress into fatal diseases! Your Naturopathic appointments are crucial for prevention and the enhancement of all bodily functions.
Cancer (as well as all other patient main concerns) here at the Natural Path Alternative Health Care Centre is taken very seriously. Early detection for cancer is extremely important for successful results, and proper treatment with natural substances can be discussed with Dr. Dodd.
