Enhancing Your Diet With Functional Foods
What Do Your Cells Really Need?
Before giving you the scoop on what your cells really need, let’s reveal some interesting facts regarding “the link between diet and disease” taken from Foods That Harm, Foods That Heal, Reader’s Digest:
Disease Onset Linked to Diet
Arteriosclerosis 50%
Hypertension 50%
Stroke 50%
Diabetes 50%
Coronary Heart Disease 40%
Cancer 35-50%
Based on the above chart, it is suggested that we stick to the basics. Nature has already provided us with an abundance of functional foods that can lower the risk of many chronic diseases such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains… (that is whole, not enriched grains), legumes, nuts and seeds, and sprouts.
The best thing to do is…
- Choose foods in their whole natural state.
- Substitute refined sugar with natural sweeteners (stevia, honey, maple sugar, succanat).
- Avoid refined flour and vegetable oils (olive, canola).
- Stay away from canned, frozen, ready prepared “convenience foods” and processed preparations.
- Go easy on mustard, pepper, vinegar, salt, condiments, canned meats, fried or greasy food, coffee, tea and alcohol.
Now that we have established what not to eat, let’s dive into what you should be doing to give your body the nutrients it deserves.
Live, natural and good quality!
These are a few ideas to keep in mind when going out to eat, even at the grocery store. The strategies to boost energy are as follows:
Eat breakfast. This meal sets you off for the day and replenishes your energy supply from the night’s fast (hence the name ‘break’ the ‘fast’).
Concentrate on having high iron foods preventing fatigue and aiding in cell respiration such as beets, pumpkin seeds, blackstrap molasses, beans and lentils. Remember that when eating rich sources of iron take vitamin C for absorption – found in citrus fruits, red peppers, tomatoes, and broccoli.
Focus on complex carbohydrates rather than simple fixes like candy, chocolate and other sweets that provide you with nothing but a ‘rush’ followed by a sudden drop of energy. Complex carbohydrates enter and leave your body at a much slower rate providing the energy needed in a longer period of time. Fiber is also found in complex carbohydrates.
Eat smaller meals throughout the day keeping your blood sugar steady.
Stay hydrated. Water regulates your body temperature, transports nutrients throughout the body, and eliminates waste.
So, as we eat on a daily basis, it is important to also remember some rules that can also improve our digestion:
- Do not eat fruits and vegetables together.
- Do not eat between meals, unless smaller more frequent meals are eaten.
- Allow approximately five hours between meals.
- Do not drink cold liquids with meals, (small sips of lukewarm water if any).
- Do not eat late at night – allow at least three hours before going to bed.
Cancer Warriors
Cancer would be rare if devitalized foods and meats were not eaten and all unhealthy living habits were eliminated. Life given properties are taken away from such foods that help to keep the bloodstream pure, and cancer cannot develop willingly where there is a pure bloodstream.
What to do? If cancer is not treated properly and completely removed, then it will continue to spread. Having continuous treatments available at our clinic, cleansing the bloodstream, and clearing all organs of elimination are vital.
